17 October Discussions on Synoptic Gospels (Part 20)

Luke the Evangelist presents the story where Jesus reads an excerpt from the Book of Isaiah in in the synagogue of Nazareth of Galilee on Saturday. The verses 4:18-19 of the Gospel according to Luke read: "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. " (cf. Is 61:1-2). Isaiah prophesies about Messiah, while the Jews didn't accept Jesus was the Messiah and even wanted to kill Him by throwing Him off the cliff.

10 October Discussions on Synoptic Gospels (Part 19)

The broadcast tells about the healing of a leper and then of a paralytic by Jesus in Capernaum. The healing of the paralytic was unusual for the Jews because Christ first forgave his sins, and when the Jews didn't believe that the sins were  really forgiven, Jesus commanded the healed person to pick up his mat and go home.  The healing of the paralytic is also interesting and instructive because of the faith of that man's friends and because of their love toward their paralytic friend.

03 October Discussions on Synoptic Gospels (Part 18)

After performing the miracle at the Synagogue in Capernaum, Jesus visited Simon and Andrew's house where Simon's mother-in-law was lying in bed with a high fever. Jesus healed her, and she rose up from the bed and started to serve Jesus and His disciples. During the broadcast, we're also talking about the healing of multitudes of sick people and demoniacs that occurred that same day, at sunset. After all of this, Jesus departed to a desert place to pray. But after a short while, Simon and the others found him. Jesus offered to also visit other towns to preach there.

26 September Discussions on the Synoptic Gospels (Part 17)

The Evangelists Luke and Mark present perhaps the first example of exorcism performed by Jesus. After entering Capernaum, He met a man possessed with a demon. The evil spirit in the man immediately recognized Jesus and cried out: "What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are— the Holy One of God!" (Mark 1:24). Jesus strictly commanded the evil spirit to come out of the man, and it left him. It is interesting that, according to the evangelists, the people gathered there were astonished not by what happened but by how the expelling of the demon happened. The Lord Jesus wasn't like the ordinary preachers or scribes who simply preached what they had heard of or learned. Jesus preached, spoke and acted with power. The gathered people were astonished by how Jesus didn't turn to the help of any other power, but was able to cast out the evil spirit with His own word.

19 September Discussions on the Synoptic Gospels (Part 16)

After returning to His home town, the Lord Jesus Christ went to Capernaum and started off His preaching mission. The fishermen from Galilee, Simon and Andrew, James and John, became the first apostles of Jesus. They were designed to become hunters of human beings. Speaking on the election of the apostles, Luke the Evangelist presents a marvelous miracle that happened to Apostle Peter. By Jesus Christ's word, Peter and his fellow fishermen threw their nets into the sea. And while they were sure they would catch nothing, the contrary happened: the nets were filled with abundant fish. This sign was given to the apostles right before the start of their apostolic mission and showed that the Church of Christ, through the efforts of the apostles, was to be filled with many believers from different nations.

The broadcast tells the story of the temptation and 40-day fasting of Jesus Christ in the desert. Immediately after the baptism, Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the desert. When the 40 days of fast and prayer were over, Jesus was tempted by Satan. The latter tempted Jesus with three temptations. The first was tempting Jesus who hadn't eaten anything for 40 days by bread. The second was about conceit and tempting God. And the third temptation was the offer to deny God and get limitless power through worship of Satan.

Jesus comes to John the Baptist to be baptized by Him in the River Jordan. What was the reason of Jesus' baptism if He had not committed any sin and did not need repentance?
At the time of Jesus' baptism, the Holy Trinity reveals Himself: the voice of the God Father is heard; the Son of God, Jesus Christ, is Himself present in the River Jordan; and the Holy Spirit descends in the form of dove.
The baptism of Jesus at the age of 30 is not a reason to reject baptism of infants. What is the importance of the baptism of infants? This and other related questions are discussed in this issue of the program "Spiritual Discussions."

29 August Discussions on Synoptic Gospels (Part 13)

The broadcast presents John the Baptist's preaching, which, according to Mark, is the beginning of the Good News about Christ, that is, of the Gospel. John preached baptism for repentance, which was to prepare the way for Messiah and make His paths straight. 
It is interesting that the baptism preached by John was used in the Jewish environment for converting pagans into the religion of Moses. In other words, John said to Jews that the people who considered themselves the God's chosen nation needed to convert themselves.

None of the Evangelists presents the childhood and adolescence of Jesus Christ. We learn about it from apocryphal Gospels, for example, the Gospel of Thomas (or of the Infancy), Protoevangelium of James, Pseudo-Matthew's Gospel, and Arabic Gospel of the Childhood. To what extent are these Gospels reliable? 
Only the Gospel of Luke among the canonical Gospels presents the episode from Jesus' childhood where the 12-year-old Jesus talks with teachers of the Law in the Temple, asking and answering questions.

The broadcast presents the story of the flight of Jesus the Child with His mother Mary and Joseph to Egypt, also the massacre of Bethlehem's children, and the return of Jesus' family from Egypt. Why did Herod decide to kill all the male children under the age of two in Bethlehem and its vicinity? Why did God allow this to happen? Bethlehem's children are saints of the Universal Church who constantly intercede for us.

The circumcision of Jesus and His presentation to the Temple happened according to the Jewish Law, that is, on the eighth and fortieth days correspondingly. Who was Simeon the Elderly Man  who took the child Jesus in his arms in the Temple. What did his prophecy mean, and what is the explanation of his words addressed to the Holy Mother of God? In the Temple, also the prophetess Anna came forward to Jesus. What example and lesson can we take from Anna's image? These and other similar questions are discussed during this broadcast.

The broadcast discusses two events that followed the birth of Jesus Christ – the worship of the shepherds, which is accounted only by the Evangelist Luke, and the worship of the magi, which is presented only by the Evangelist Matthew. Who were these shepherds? Were they workers in the Temple, taking care of animals for sacrifices? Who and from where were the magi – Melkon, Gaspar and Baghdasar, according to tradition? What did their gifts symbolize? And why did Herod want to clarify by all means the date and place of the birth of Jesus?

25 July Discussions on Synoptic Gospels (Part 8)

The broadcast tells about the pregnancy of the Virgin Mary and of the birth of Jesus Christ. Joseph listened to the angel and abandoned the desire to secretly let Mary go. Joseph and Mary went from Nazareth to Bethlehem to participate in the census, and there, in Bethlehem, Jesus was born. According to the Evangelist Matthew, this happened so that the word of the prophet Isaiah (7:14) would be fulfilled: "Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a Son, and his name shall be called Immanuel." Is this part of the prophecy only about Christ, or maybe it also meant the son of the prophet Isaiah?

The broadcast presents the genealogy of Christ in both Matthew’s and Luke’s Gospels. Matthew starts the genealogy from Abraham and reaches Joseph, while Luke starts from Joseph and reaches Adam and then God. Why was genealogy important for all Jews? And what was the reason of presenting two versions of Jesus’ genealogy by the two evangelists? There are differences between these two versions; what is the reason for this? Surprisingly, Matthew also mentions women’s names in his version of the genealogy. Who were these women, and what was the goal of mentioning them?

11 July Discussions on Synoptic Gospels (Part VI)

The broadcast presents the wonderful birth and circumcision of John the Baptist. It was customary to also name the child on his circumcision day. The relatives of Elisabeth and Zechariah suggested the name of Zechariah, but the mother didn’t agree because, as medieval exegetes say, Elisabeth had learned by the Holy Spirit that her son’s name would be John. At the time of John’s birth, his father’s dumb tongue spoke again. John the Baptist lived in deserts since his childhood, for which reason many think he was one of the Essenites.
