The timing of the debate on Armenian Genocide is unrelated to current developments or to Israel-Turkey relations, Merets MP Zehava Galon told Armenian News-NEWS.am. Discussions on the topic are held on her initiative.

“Meretz brings up the issue every year close to the remembrance day of the Armenian genocide for moral reasons and the same has happened this year. It is a question of values, not foreign policy, and should not be affected by the current state of affairs,” she said.

According to her, the ongoing debate in the Knesset and last year’s unprecedented decision to have an open thorough discussion in the Knesset’s Education Committee significantly promote the cause of recognition and acknowledgement of the crimes against the Armenian people.

“By discussing it in the Knesset and raising the debate, we are drawing closer to an honest discourse on past events and to rectifying the historic wrong that is the omitting of the Armenian genocide from the global memory,” she added.

During discussions on Tuesday Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin said that Israel has an obligation to remember the murder of over a million Armenians at the hands of the Turks.
