Akn, a town in the Sebastia region of the historical Lesser Armenia, was famous for its rich and varied musical folklore. A number of samples of Armenian folk music of old tradition, which had preserved their Armenian image, reached the 20th century thanks to the residents of Akn and were preserved in their environment. Antunis of Akn are one of such samples which are considered to be the inheritors of the medieval hayrens of gusans. In 1895 Komitas recorded 25 songs of the Akn region from the repertoire of the resident of Akn Hovsep Janikyan and published in the ‟Collection of folk songs of Akn”. Two of our broadcasts are dedicated to the review of the content of this collection.

From July 28-31, 2016, the 37th Euroradio Folk Festival and the 24th Viljandi Folk Music Festival were jointly organized in Estonian Viljandi. Armenia was represented within the scope of these festivals by the Nubar Folk Dance and Song Group. Nubar's performance was received with great enthusiasm and high rating both by the audience and the organizers of the festival. The Nubar Folk Ensemble is an active group representing the sphere of Armenian traditional music. The ensemble has taken part in various republican and international festivals and given many concerts in Yerevan and Armenian marzes. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the establishment of this ensemble. We're talking about Nubar's activities with its art director, musicologist, folklorist Lusine Nazaryan and its members, Narine Hovhannisyan, Sona Grigoryan, and Alla Mkheyan.

The fact that Armenian spiritual music was formed on the basis of the Armenian folk music culture was first substantiated by Komitas, who compared the ties between these two branches with the relationship between sister and brother. This proposition of Komitas was reaffirmed by the Armenian musicologists of later generations. However, the problem of the relationship between these two music branches still has many aspects that need to be studied. We're talking on this topic with musicologist and medievalist, researcher at the Komitas Museum-Institute Lilit Harutyunyan.
